Foggy Freeze

Wow!  Has it been a while?  I see that it’s been since June and here it is December.  There are plenty of photos to go around so we’ll try and get back on track.  Here’s a set of photos from near the Dufur graveyard.  The last week or so we’ve been battling with freezing fog that turns the streets into sheets of ice at night.  It’s very pretty but very cold.  The fog has settled in for the winter and it’s one of those things that we dread.  Here’s to hoping the sun will shine soon!

Morel Hunting

Near Dufur you can go out and Morel hunt.  Today Ted stopped by my house and said, “I’m heading up there in a bit.  Do you want to go?”  I’ve been wanting to go for a while so I decided that it would be a good idea.

Before we left we stopped by the Barlow Ranger Station so that I could be a “legal” picker.  It’s legal to go out and have 1 gallon of morels per car without a permit but he explained to me that he’d enjoy having 2 gallons of morels instead of one.  Once I was legal he drove up toward the mountain on the road that connects Dufur to the Mt. Hood National Forest.

Once he found a good picking spot we got out of the car and made our way up a clearing.  He gave me pointers on how to spot the morels.  To me everything looks like pine-cones but he has a great eye for catching them popping up out of the ground.

We hunted for about 3 hours and ended up with about a half-gallon of the things.  I’ve had them before and with that batch I deep fried them.  They are pretty yummy.  Right now my portion of the hunt is sitting in my fridge waiting to be fried up.  Here’s a little taste (photographically) of what you go out and do.

Walkin’ ‘Round

I figured it would be nice to get some new photos up.  I took a walk tonight and highlighted some things from our little town.

Defunct gas pumps.  Sometimes people stop by here and ask, “Is there any place to get gas in this town.”  The answer has been, “No” ever since I moved here 4.5 years ago.

The Historic Balch Hotel.Old(er) houses dot the main road through town.I’m not sure what the “Fort Dufur” house is all about.  Maybe someone will chime in and educate us all.

Come out and see these places!

Running Nights

What can you do at nights in Dufur?  Well, you can take a run.  The weather has started to show signs of spring and tonight was relatively warm.  If you aren’t into running you can take a stroll down the lazy streets and make your way to the city park.  On the way you’ll pass by Kramers, The Past Time, and The Historic Balch Hotel.  They all have their little quirks that you will want to see!  Take a run, a walk, or a stroll the next time you can.

Stars over Church

There are great starry nights in Dufur.  This is one of the churches (St. Alphonsus Catholic Church).  A night walk around this small town is a great way to spend some time.  You can literally walk down the center of the streets and take in all the sights.   Just make sure you let the 1-2 cars that pass you by move along their way.

Pockets of Vintage

There are pockets of vintage views all around Dufur.  You just have to come out and find them.  This is located just across the street from the Balch Hotel.  You can visit the city park, The Balch, and this vintage view all within walking distance (I think everything in Dufur is walking distance).  Make sure when you are visiting Dufur to check out the vintage views that we have to offer!

Fading Light

At some point visit Dufur and check out the sunsets that happen as you look through Dufur Valley. Purely spectacular!

Coyotes

At night you can hear the howls of the coyotes.  Dufur residents on the outskirts of town can spot families of coyotes gathered in the back yard in the evening.  There’s plenty of howling that happens at night as the cubs learn how to call out to their community (and ours).

Sometimes they become pests for farmers and the population needs to be “thinned” out.  This coyote did not have that great of a morning.  The owner of the four wheeler was getting lunch when I came across the coyote.  I quickly grabbed a picture as I walked by.  When you take a walk around this town there’s not telling what you will see*.

*A post about 4-H kids walking their sheep will surely be shared soon.

Ghost Towns

Dufur is surrounded by old settlements that have been abandoned years ago.  This property is on Old Hix Road just off of Dufur Gap road just south of us.  Go ahead and take a drive this spring and see what you can discover!
